Water Efficiency Regulation Takes Effect in Turkey: A Step Towards Sustainable Water Management
Published on December 30, 2024, in the Official Gazette, the Water Efficiency Regulation aims to promote water efficiency practices across Turkey. The regulation outlines a series of measures to enhance water usage efficiency across all sectors, including the establishment of Water Efficiency Systems, assessment of current water usage, identification of applicable strategies, and ongoing monitoring and reporting.
One of the key components of the regulation is the development of Water Efficiency Provincial Plans, which will ensure that water efficiency efforts are more effectively tailored to local needs. By creating region-specific strategies, the regulation aims to optimize the use of water resources nationwide.
To encourage water efficiency, businesses and activities that implement efficient water practices will be awarded one of three levels of the Water Efficiency Certificate: “Blue”, “Green”, and “Turquoise”. These certificates will document achievements and incentivize sustainable water management practices.
Agriculture and Forestry Minister Ibrahim Yumaklı announced on social media that the government will continue its work with the “Zero Loss of Water” philosophy. He emphasized that documenting water efficiency successes will play a crucial role in fostering sustainable water management practices.
Minister Yumaklı also revealed that the regulation includes the establishment of a Smart Water Efficiency Management System. This digital infrastructure will strengthen data management in water efficiency applications and allow for effective monitoring of the process.
