DMF - Dimethyl Fumarate Analysis

DMF - Dimetyhl Fumarite Testing

The European Commission passed Directive 2009/251/EC recently requiring member states to pledge not to place the products containing biocide dimethyl fumarate(DMF) on the EU market. It regulates products containing DMF to be placed on the EU market from 1 May 2009.

Requirement of Directive 2009/251/EC (DMF)

After 1 May 2009, products containing DMF were prohibited from being placed on and sold on the market. Furthermore, the products which have already been placed and sold on the market should be recalled; The content of DMF in the product or its parts should not exceed 0.1 mg / kg (0.1ppm);and Desiccant and fungicides pouch containing DMF are banned to use in products and packaging.

Most of Dimethyl fumarate (DMF) is packaged in the small bags in furniture or shoe box in order to keep the products dry and prevent the products from getting moldy. However, consumers might get in touch with DMF inside the package. Dimethyl Fumarate permeates to the consumer’s skin through clothing and causes skin-contact dermatitis such as itches, irritation, redness and burns. In some cases, it is said to cause acute respiratory disease. The presence of DMF in various products poses a serious danger to consumers.

If you are an importer or manufacturer of furniture, bags or shoes, you need to ensure your products do not contain DMF. Other hazardous substances that are restricted in furniture, bags or shoes include SVHC, PAHs, Phthalates, PFOS, PoHS, the substances on REACH-Restriction list and so on.

If you are importer, you might ask your suppliers to provide testing report regarding whether DMF is present. Doruk Sistem offers such testing services to you or your suppliers and make your products comply with EU legislation. Doruk Sistem will follow up and inform you about developments on DMF as a complementary service.
