ECHA Adds Five Hazardous Chemicals to the Candidate List (SVHC) and Updates One Entry
The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) has expanded the Candidate List of Substances of Very High Concern (SVHCs) by adding five new hazardous chemicals and updating one entry. This update reflects a continued commitment to managing chemical safety under the REACH Regulation.
Newly Added Substances
- 6-[(C10-C13)-alkyl-(branched, unsaturated)-2,5-dioxopyrrolidin-1-yl]hexanoic acid: This substance is toxic for reproduction and used in lubricants, greases, release products, and metalworking fluids.
- EC Number: 701-118-1
- CAS Number: 2156592-54-8
- O,O,O-triphenyl phosphorothioate: Identified as persistent, bioaccumulative, and toxic (PBT), it is commonly used in lubricants and greases.
- EC Number: 209-909-9
- CAS Number: 597-82-0
- Octamethyltrisiloxane: Classified as very persistent and very bioaccumulative (vPvB), this chemical is used in cosmetics, personal care products, pharmaceuticals, cleaning products, and sealants.
- EC Number: 203-497-4
- CAS Number: 107-51-7
- Perfluamine: This vPvB substance is utilized in the manufacturing of electrical, electronic, and optical equipment.
- EC Number: 206-420-2
- CAS Number: 338-83-0
- Reaction mass of: triphenylthiophosphate and tertiary butylated phenyl derivatives: Though not registered under REACH, it has been identified as PBT to prevent regrettable substitution.
- EC Number: 421-820-9
- CAS Number: 192268-65-8
Updated Entry
Tris(4-nonylphenyl, branched and linear) phosphite: Updated due to its endocrine-disrupting properties affecting the environment. It is used in polymers, adhesives, sealants, and coatings.
Implications of Inclusion
When a substance is added to the Candidate List under REACH, companies face specific obligations:
- Suppliers must inform customers and consumers if a product contains more than 0.1% (w/w) of an SVHC and provide safe-use instructions.
- Importers and producers must notify ECHA within six months of the inclusion date if their articles contain these substances.
- Notification to the SCIP database is required for articles containing more than 0.1% (w/w) of an SVHC.
