ECHA Announces Timeline for PFAS Restriction Evaluation

Helsinki, 27 August 2025 – The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) announced that it aims to complete its scientific evaluation of the EU-wide restriction on per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) by the end of 2026.

This update follows the publication of the revised restriction proposal on 20 August 2025, with ECHA clarifying the official timeline in today’s note.

Why Are PFAS Important?

PFAS are known as chemicals that are persistent in the environment, bioaccumulative, and harmful to human health. The EU is pursuing a comprehensive restriction process to limit their use.

Timeline

  • 20 August 2025 → Revised restriction proposal published.

  • 27 August 2025 → ECHA announced the official assessment timeline.

  • End of 2026 → Completion of the scientific evaluation of the PFAS restriction proposal.

Implications for Industry

The announced timeline provides a critical roadmap for compliance planning. Companies placing PFAS-containing products on the market should:

  • Develop alternative solutions,

  • Prepare regulatory compliance strategies,

  • Closely follow the restriction process.
