June 2025 RAC and SEAC Meeting: PFAS Restriction and BPA Exposure Limit Defined
On 18 June 2025, the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) announced key outcomes from the June meetings of its Risk Assessment Committee (RAC) and Socio-Economic Analysis Committee (SEAC). Central topics included the proposed EU-wide restriction of PFAS substances and a new occupational exposure limit (OEL) for Bisphenol A (BPA).
BPA OEL Set at 24 µg/m³
RAC completed its scientific assessment for 4,4’-isopropylidenediphenol (Bisphenol A) and proposed an OEL of 24 µg/m³, which:
Protects workers’ reproductive health
Covers additional toxic effects of BPA
Includes a recommendation for a legislative note to protect unborn and breastfed children
Chromium(VI) and Other Updates
The restriction proposal for chromium(VI) substances complies with REACH Annex XV
A six-month public consultation started on 18 June
RAC adopted 10 opinions on harmonised classification and labelling
RAC and SEAC adopted 3 final opinions and shared 18 drafts for authorisation applications
Strategic Outlook in Light of PFAS and BPA Developments
The June meetings mark an important step in the EU’s proactive approach to chemical safety. By targeting persistent substances like PFAS and setting stricter limits for workplace exposure to BPA, ECHA supports a safer and more sustainable future.
For businesses and industry stakeholders, these developments highlight the urgent need to review compliance strategies and adapt operations to upcoming regulatory shifts.
