ROHS Analysis and ROHS Directives
RoHS is the acronym for the Restriction of the use of certain Hazardous Substances in electrical and electronic products. From July 1, 2006, RoHS Directive deal with the restriction of use of certain hazardous substances, including lead (Pb), mercury (Hg), cadmium (Cd), hexavalent chromium (Cr(+6)) , Poly-brominated Bipheneyls (PPB) or Polybrominated Diohenyl Ethers (PBDE) which are found in electrical and electronic products on the EU market.
RoHS directive was converted to the laws and regulations of EU on December 31, 2005, while manufacturers’ products will comply with the Directive from July 1, 2006. In principle, the EU RoHS Directive covers all energy-consuming products, but mainly affects electrical, solid, liquid and gaseous fuel products. The Directive affects not only finished-product manufacturers, but also parts manufacturers.
For many this is a considerable environmental challenge. It is closely linked with the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive (WEEE) 2002/96/EC which sets collection, recycling and recovery targets for electrical goods. Meanwhile, it is also similar to the End of Life Vehicles (ELV) regulation, which prohibits the use of these hazardous substances in vehicles sold after July 2003.

The following product categories are impacted by the RoHS Directive:
- Large household electric appliances: refrigerators, washers, stoves, air conditioners
- Small household electric appliances: vacuum cleaners, electric iron, hair dryers, coffee makers, ovens, clocks
- Computing & communication equipment: computers, fax machine, phones, cell phones
- Civil equipments: radios, televisions, video cameras, musical instruments
- Lighting equipments: fluorescent lamps except household lighting, lighting control fixtures
- Power tools: electric drills, lathes, bonder, sprayers (except large industrial tools which require fixture)
- Toys, entertainment and sport equipments: electric vehicle, videogame players
- Medical devices: radiation apparatus, electrocardiograph testers and analytical instruments
- Monitoring and control devices: smoke detectors, incubators, factory-used monitor controllers.
- Automatic dispensers
The directive is not applicable to electrical and electronic equipment components, repaired parts and re-used components put on the EU market before July 1, 2006.
