ECHA BPC Meeting February 2025: Key Decisions on Active Substances and Union Authorisations

ECHA’s Biocidal Products Committee (BPC) met from 25 to 28 February 2025 and made significant decisions regarding active substances and Union authorisations. Here are the highlights of their February meeting:

  1. Active Substance Renewals
The BPC supported the renewal of the following active substances for product-type 8 (wood preservatives):

    • Tetrahydro-3,5-dimethyl-1,3,5-thiadiazine-2-thione (Dazomet)
    • 3-iodo-2-propynyl butylcarbamate (IPBC)
  2. Union Authorisations
The committee adopted opinions on several biocidal product families for various product types:

    • Propan-1-ol/Propan-2-ol for product-types 2 (disinfectants and algaecides) and 4 (food and feed area).
    • Hydrogen peroxide for product-types 2, 3 (veterinary hygiene), and 4.
    • C(M)IT/MIT (3:1) and Glutaral (Glutaraldehyde) for product-types 2 and 4.
    • Glutaral (Glutaraldehyde) for product-types 6 (preservatives for products during storage), 11 (preservatives for liquid-cooling and processing systems), and 12 (slimicides).
  3. Additional Opinions and Requests
The committee also adopted an opinion on the data submitted for a Union authorisation requirement for a biocidal product family containing Active chlorine released from sodium hypochlorite for product-type 2.
Moreover, the European Commission requested an opinion on adding Chlorocresol-based products for a new use, and the committee considered the data submission accordingly.

  4. Anticoagulant Rodenticide Renewals
The committee discussed the renewal of seven anticoagulant rodenticide substances for product-type 14 (rodenticides), with the adoption of the opinions expected later this year.
