Europe: Updated Classification, Labelling, and Packaging (CLP) Rules Now in Effect
The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) urges companies to review their substance portfolios and make necessary updates. The new CLP rules aim to enhance the identification and communication of chemical hazards.
Key Changes
The updated regulation introduces:
- Clearer classification rules for mixtures and substances with multiple constituents.
- Emphasis on grouping principles in harmonised classification.
- Rules for clearer labelling of hazardous chemicals, including digital labels.
- Changes to information in the Classification and Labelling Inventory.
- The European Commission’s authority to request harmonised classification proposals.
- Rules for selling chemicals at refill stations.
- Distributors’ clarified role as duty holders for poison centre notifications.
New Hazard Classes and Industry Responsibilities
New hazard classes, including those for environmental and health risks, require companies to reassess their portfolios and notify ECHA of updates. Companies can comply by updating their REACH registration dossiers or CLP notifications.
