Taiwan Sets RoHS Compliance Standards for Lithium Battery Devices
With the growing adoption of renewable energy systems and home energy storage devices, Taiwan’s Bureau of Standards, Metrology and Inspection (BSMI) has introduced a new proposal to enforce mandatory inspection requirements for lithium battery storage systems. This initiative aligns with Taiwan’s long-term goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.
RoHS Compliance for Safety and Sustainability
Due to the potential thermal runaway risks associated with lithium-ion batteries, BSMI plans to regulate these devices under the Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) standards to ensure they are safe and environmentally friendly.
Compliance Assessment Procedures
Manufacturers and importers can choose between:
- Registration of Product Certification (RPC): Allows direct customs clearance without additional inspections.
- Type-Approved Batch Inspection (TABI): Requires inspection applications before shipment or upon arrival.

Products Under Scope
- Stationary lithium battery storage devices with a capacity of up to 20 kWh.
- Devices capable of bidirectional power conversion or connection with solar panels.
Implementation Timeline and Certification Validity
Certificates under both schemes will remain valid for three years. The new requirements will take effect starting July 1, 2025, ensuring the safety and environmental protection of the growing number of household energy storage systems.
