ECHA’s Integrated Regulatory Strategy: Advancing Chemical Safety
The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) has made significant progress in chemical safety through its Integrated Regulatory Strategy (IRS) from 2019 to 2023. The initiative successfully screened high-production-volume chemicals (over 100 tonnes per year) on the European market as of 2018.
Key Achievements of 2019-2023
- 6,000 substances screened: This included nearly 4,100 high-production-volume chemicals.
- 1,900 substances: Identified as potentially requiring regulatory risk management, although further data is needed for over two-thirds to confirm hazards.
- 60% of substances: Determined to require no further regulatory action.
ECHA also categorized risk management substances into groups and incorporated them into the EU’s Restrictions Roadmap. Notable groups include bisphenols, ortho-phthalates, flame retardants, and hydrocarbyl siloxanes.
The Next Phase: 2024-2028 Strategy
The updated IRS aims to further improve the protection of human health and the environment by accelerating the adoption of risk management measures. The focus will remain on the one substance, one assessment principle, while ECHA integrates new tasks into this coordinated approach.
Commitment to Sustainability
According to Ofelia Bercaru, Director of Prioritisation and Integration at ECHA, the IRS has significantly supported the United Nations’ 2030 Sustainable Development Goals. By enhancing collaboration and transparency, the strategy aims to maintain its robust knowledge base and align efforts across stakeholders.
