NAMs4NANO Project: Promoting Uses of New Assessment Methods
New reports under the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA)’s NAMs4NANO Project have been published. The project promotes the use of New Approach Methodologies (NAMs) to assess the potential food safety risks posed by nanoparticles. These reports were prepared by experts from EFSA’s partner organizations.
Details of the Reports
- Review of NAMs for Nanoparticle Risk Assessment
This report provides a comprehensive review of currently available NAMs that could be useful for assessing the risks of nanoparticles in the food and feed sector. It:
- Follows the structure of the EFSA Guidance on Nanomaterials Risk Assessment and expands it where needed.
- Offers decision-making support in selecting NAMs for nano-specific risk assessments.
- Proposal for a Qualification System for NAMs
The second report introduces a generic framework designed to accelerate the regulatory use of NAMs for chemical risk assessment in food and feed. Specifically:
- The framework is initially tailored for nanoparticle risk assessment in alignment with the EFSA Nanomaterials Risk Assessment Guidance.
- Published as an interim version, it invites broader discussions among stakeholders in nanotechnology, food safety, and public health.
EFSA encourages comments on this report to be sent by the end of December 2024 to MESE@efsa.europa.eu.
